WHAT IS BONE GRAFTING?
Dental implants are like screws placed in the maxillary or mandibular bone to replace the root of the tooth. In order for this screw to integrate successfully into the bone (osseointegration) and for the treatment to go smoothly, it must be applied in areas where there is minimal bone.
Bone grafting is used to increase the height and/or thickness of the bone when the dentist concludes that it is too thin or weak to allow and support the placement of implants.
HOW DOES A BONE GRAFTING PROCEDURE WORK?
The need for bone grafting is always the result of a thorough evaluation of the patient by the implantologist. This evaluation is done with the help of tests such as orthopantomography or CBCT.
The materials used in this type of operation are biocompatible bones and membranes, produced by laboratories. The procedure is performed under local anesthesia.
WHAT IS THE BONE INTEGRATION TIME?
After placement, it is necessary to wait a certain amount of time for the bone to actually become stronger and more stable. In total, this process can take between 3 and 12 months; but the right waiting time will always depend on the clinical situation and characteristics of each patient.
