WHAT ARE DENTAL IMPLANTS?

Today, dental implants are the most modern solution to compensate for missing teeth.

The dental implant is in fact an artificial tooth root in the form of a screw, usually made of titanium, a material that is biocompatible with human bone. This screw has the role of replacing the root of the missing tooth.

As a structure, the dental implant consists of two parts: the screw-like part that will be inserted into the bone; and the prosthetic abutment - the part that will connect this artificial root with the crown, bridge or prosthesis to be fitted.

THE BENEFITS

The most important advantage over other methods of replacing missing teeth is that in the case of an implant, the neighbouring teeth remain intact and will not be affected. In the case of a bridge, for example, the replacement of the missing tooth is done by using the neighbouring teeth as the attachment structure for the missing tooth. This involves casting and devitalizing teeth that may be healthy. With dental implants, the treatment is much more conservative as it does not involve 'sacrificing' the neighbouring teeth.

DENTAL IMPLANTS: THE STEPS OF THE PROCEDURE

Consultation

The role of the consultation is to determine the patient's condition and needs from an implantological point of view; to understand the goals that the patient wishes to obtain and to assess whether or not they can be achieved with dental implants.

In the same time, this first consultation covers the patient's need for information and any other curiosities about the procedure. Our doctors will explain in detail what the procedure involves. You will be informed about the benefits and risks of this treatment and how long it will take. Or what realistic expectations the patient can have after this type of procedure.

3D radiography and treatment plan

After understanding the patient's objectives, a 3D X-ray will be taken during the same session. Dental-Care Esch is equipped with a state-of-the-art 3D scanner (CBCT technology)

which allows an accurate interpretation of the patient's condition to determine whether he or she is a good candidate for dental treatment with implants. The CBCT technology allows for a 3D scan of the oral cavity, determining with precision the position of the existing teeth as well as the quality and quantity of the existing bone, the position of the nerves and the sinuses. The interpretation of the information obtained, after the 3D X-ray has been taken, allows us to set up a treatment plan tailored to each patient's condition. This initial consultation will end with a estimated quote based on the proposed treatment plan.

Surgical guide

Computer-guided implant surgery is the newest method used in implantology. This method uses high-precision technology for position planning and implant type selection.

This involves using the 3D images obtained with CBCT to determine the quality and quantity of the bone where the implant is to be placed, but also to mark the position of nerves or sinuses.

Based on this information, a 3D model is created that "virtually" places the implants in the best position according to the patient's anatomy. The 3D model is then transformed in the laboratory into a precise guide that marks the exact location of the implant. This guide will be used during the implant operation. The advantages of using such a guide include: greater precision in the choice of the type of implant and the position of the implant. Other advantages are minimal trauma and easier and faster recovery.

Preparation for implant placement

Extractions and bone grafts (if necessary).
Preparation for implant placement may, in some cases, require one or more extractions

L’interprétation de la radiographie 3D peut avertir  qu’il n’y a pas assez d’os pour soutenir un implant. Dans ce cas, cette phase comprendra aussi l’addition des bone grafts.

Healing screws

After the implant has been successfully integrated, a healing screw will be placed. Its role is to contribute to the healing of the gum above the implant

and give it the right shape so that the final crown, or prosthesis, fits and looks natural. However, there are situations in which the healing screw can be placed immediately after implant placement, such as in the case of one-stage treatment (All-on-4 and All-on-6).e dar-lhe a forma certa para que a coroa final, ou prótese, encaixe e pareça natural. Contudo, há situações em que o pilar de cicatrização pode ser colocado imediatamente após a colocação do implante, como no caso do tratamento de carga imediata (All-on-4 e All-on-6).

Implant and temporary prothesis

The dental implant surgery is performed under local anaesthetia. The operation involves opening the gum through an incision, inserting the implant and suturing the gum.

If you opt for the surgical guide, this step is much less invasive; the gum will not be cut or re-sewn afterwards.

Depending on the case, there is the possibility of having a temporary crown or bridge that will "mask" the temporary lack of teeth. These temporary crowns will be replaced at the end of the process by the final prosthesis or crown.

Post-implant consultation and suture removal

7 to10 days after the implant placement, a consultation will be performed. The purpose of this consultation is to see the post-operative evolution and to remove the sutures.

If the patient has chosen to perform the operation using the surgical guide, there will be no stitches to remove.
This is followed by the healing period, between 3 and 6 months, during which the implant will be fully integrated into the existing bone structure.

Crown or bridge

After the integration period, the temporary crowns (if any) will be replaced by a permanent crown or bridge.

First an impression will be taken which will be sent to the laboratory to make the final crown.

PRICE OF DENTAL IMPLANTS

The costs of dental implants are determined by the number of implants needed, the complexity of the case, the treatments needed beforehand and the type of dentures chosen. After the consultation, a personalised treatment plan will be defined and based on this an estimate of the costs will be made. The CNS can, under certain conditions, cover part of the costs of the prosthesis on implants. Other supplementary insurances partially cover the costs of dental implants.
