WHAT IS ENDODONTICS (ROOT CANAL THERAPY)?

Dévitalisations et autres traitementsdes racines

Endodontics is the speciality of dentistry aimed at treating pathologies of the pulp (commonly called nerve).

The dental pulp is located inside the tooth and is surrounded by the hard tissue - the dentin. It is responsible for the nutrition and sensitivity of your teeth, through the blood vessels and nerves that make it up.

Sometimes damage to the dental pulp can result from trauma, fractures or deep caries. In these cases they can cause tooth sensitivity and abscesses in the gums.

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS THAT INDICATE THE NEED FOR A ROOT CANAL TREATMENT?

Symptoms that indicate that you have a dental infection include spontaneous pain. Also prolonged sensitivity of the teeth when exposed to cold and/or heat; or discomfort when touching and chewing. Other symptoms are the presence of abscesses in the gums or fistulas (small bubbles of pus in the gums).
In case of necrosis or irreversible inflammation of the dental pulp, endodontics is the only solution to save your tooth. It also allows you to avoid other complications, such as tooth infection and gum abscesses.

In addition to removing the pulp pathology, root canal therapy allows you to restore the chewing function of the tooth with subsequent reconstruction.

WHEN IS THE ENDODONTIC TREATMENT APPROPRIATE?

There is also the option of root canal therapy, which is a new treatment of the root canals. It should always be the first option for teeth where a previous root canal treatment has failed.
During an endodontic re-treatment, all the existing contents inside the root canal system will be removed, with a new disinfection, preparation and filling in three dimensions. After the treatment, the tooth is restored.

HOW DOES THE TREATMENT WORK?

The first step in endodontic treatment is to remove infected or necrotic pulp.

Under local anesthesia and using appropriate drills, an opening is made. The pulp tissue or filling material remaining from previous endodontic treatments (in case of endodontic retreatment) is removed. retirée.
Then the pulp chamber and the root canal system are properly disinfected. The aim is to eliminate all bacteria. Once properly prepared, the canals are ready to be filled, usually with Gutta-Percha, a vegetable resin derivative. Once the canals are filled, the tooth is sealed with cement and restored to its natural appearance.
The duration of your endodontic treatment depends on several factors. In situations where it is not possible to complete the treatment in one visit, a temporary restoration will be placed in the access opening to protect the tooth between appointments.
