WHAT IS A SINUS LIFT?

Over the past decades, implant dentistry has been widely used in the rehabilitation of edentulous (toothless) areas. One of the essential conditions for implant placement is sufficient bone height. When this condition is not met, the procedure of lifting or elevating the maxillary sinus (area behind the upper dental arch) is proposed.

The maxillary sinus is a pneumatic cavity that is in contact with the upper posterior teeth; and it has many functions, mainly related to our breathing.

Sinus lift is a surgical procedure that increases the amount of bone in the posterior jaw. It is usually used to place dental implants later on, when there is a loss of a natural tooth and a consequent loss of bone volume in the edentulous area.

WHAT IS THE IMPORTANCE OF THIS SURGERY?

To ensure the success and longevity of the implants, it is essential that there are minimal amounts of bone tissue remaining, with adequate thickness and length to support chewing forces.

HOW IS THE SINUS LIFT PERFORMED?

This procedure involves opening a bone window to access the site where bone will be deposited for the osseous graft. The purpose of the procedure is to increase the height of the residual bone in the posterior maxilla and this is done by raising Schneider's membrane and filling in the empty area.
