Wisdom tooth – extraction and other interesting facts

extraction dents de sagesse

What are ‘wisdom teeth’ and why are they called like that?

The medical term is ‘third molars’, but more commonly known as ‘wisdom teeth’. The appellative of ‘wisdom teeth’ is due to the age when they start appearing. There are 4 in total and they are the last teeth to erupt; they appear between the age of 17 and 21 years old, which of course it might have nothing to do with wiseness 😊

Am I wiser or more intelligent if I have already my wisdom teeth?

Sadly to break the news, but the appearance of the wisdom teeth does not make us nor wiser or smarter. They are a sign that we are completing the cycle of permanent teeth growth, but definitively not a sign that we have suddenly become wiser.

What happens if I still do not have my wisdom teeth yet?

Past the age of wisdom tooth eruption and still do not have any? Do not worry, it is not that uncommon.
In fact, around one third of the population are born without. Or others, although they may have the teeth, they will never see them emerge.

Is the wisdom tooth extraction needed?

While some people keep their wisdom teeth their entire life, the majority of people will need at some point to extract them. If the wisdom tooth has enough space for eruption, we might not even feel its appearance. On the contrary, if it doesn’t, it will stay partially or fully within the gums. In this case we are talking about Impacted wisdom teeth and they will need to be extracted.

If and when they will need to be extracted is up to you and your dentist to decide.
