Extraction Of Wisdom Teeth
Extraction of
wisdom teeth
WHAT ARE WISDOM TEETH AND WHEN SHOULD THEY BE REMOVED?
We have 4 third molars or "wisdom teeth": 2 upper and 2 lower teeth that grow randomly, being the last teeth to emerge or erupt. They are located behind all the other teeth, at the end of the dental arches on both sides.
Wisdom tooth extraction is a surgical procedure performed to remove the third molars. The procedure is done under local anesthesia in the dental practice and takes about an hour. It can be performed when the teeth are already erupted or even when they are impacted (under the gum). Depending on the position of the wisdom teeth, we may need a panoramic X-ray or a dental scan.
When justified, we advise our patients to extract two teeth each time or only one tooth with an interval of a few weeks until the next appointment.
WHEN TO EXTRACT THEM?
Wisdom teeth often compromise the dental arch, pressing and pushing the other teeth. This can lead to trauma and loss of alignment of the teeth. Other symptoms are pain in different parts of the face, such as the jaw, ears and head.
They are also the cause of infections, deep caries and periodontal disease, due to the inability to maintain good hygiene because of the lack of access to the back of the mouth.
